Our Creative Process

The intricate art of chikankari embroidery, originating from Lucknow, India, entails a meticulous process infused with tradition and skill. Here’s an overview:

Designing : The initial step involves designing the intricate motifs that define chikankari embroidery. While these patterns hold ancient roots, decisions regarding the choice of fabric, specific motifs placement, and overall garment style are carefully made.
Procurement of Fabric : High-quality fabric is sourced from Surat, ensuring it meets the exacting standards required for chikankari embroidery.
Fabric Preparation : Upon arrival in Lucknow, the fabric is meticulously measured and cut, according to the predetermined style, whether it’s a kurti or an anarkali, a saree, etc
Stitching : Skilled artisans then undertake the task of stitching the fabric pieces together, adhering to the chosen style. Unstitched pieces are excluded from this stage.
Block Printing : Wooden blocks intricately carved with the chosen designs are used to transfer patterns onto the fabric using eco-friendly dyes. This step serves as a guide for embroiderers during the subsequent stages.
Embroidery : The heart of the process lies in the hands of trusted artisans known as karigars, who distribute fabric pieces and threads to women in neighboring villages. Up to a thousand women are approximatelyinvolved in this process, ensuring each stitch is meticulously executed to achieve the desired pattern and texture.
Quality Control : After the embroidery phase, each piece undergoes rigorous quality checks. Any deviations are addressed promptly to maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Washing and Finishing : Once approved, the garments undergo a thorough washing process to remove any remnants of the printing and embroidery stages. Careful drying and pressing enhance the beauty of the final product.
Final Checks and Packaging : The finished pieces are meticulously inspected one final time before being tagged, packaged in polybags, and prepared for sale. From cutting and stitching to blocking, embroidering, washing, and branding, the chikankari process involves multiple stages, each executed with precision and care.

Chikankari embroidery epitomizes patience, skill, and attention to detail, resulting in garments prized for their elegance and craftsmanship. While traditionally done on muslin or cotton, chikankari now graces various fabrics, including silk, chiffon, and georgette, showcasing its timeless appeal.
